The year is 872, and many kingdoms of what is now England have fallen, leaving the great kingdom of Wessex standing alone and defiant against the invading Danes. Uhtred, som of a Saxon, is captured and raised by the Danes. As he grows up, Uhtred must find a balance between his origin and his fostered identity in order to reclaim his ancestors lands and rebuild a nation that has never been unified.
